High-Quality Rail Scales
Rail scales are some of the largest and most crucial scale purchases a business can make. In many cases, rail scales are vital to your ongoing productivity and profitability—so it is critical to choose products that are dependable, accurate, and easy to maintain.
System Scale proudly offers rail scales with a best-in-the-industry 10 Year Warranty. These scales, featuring PDX™ technology, include lightning protection with no junction box.
Whether you need static railcars, weighing-in-motion, or a truck/rail combo scale, System Scale can work with you to find the right heavy-duty weighing solution to keep your business moving. We offer many solutions that accommodate different axle types and a range of railcar sizes, all with the ability to weigh without coming to a complete stop via a coupled-in-motion rail scale.
Types of Rail Scales
We offer two main types of rail scales, each requiring site preparation, scale foundation/approaches, and track work to ensure successful installation. System Scale can help you evaluate your needs and determine the right scale for your project.
Static Scales
With a static scale, we position the rail car on the scale for weighing. Because the cars are long, manufacturers provide two small scales with a concrete dead section between the scales. The rail car is moved into the correct position with one set of wheels on one scale and the second set of wheels on the other scale. Then, the weights are summed together to obtain the accurate weight of the rail car. This configuration is called a split platform design. To choose the appropriate static scale, you need to know the sizes of your longest and shortest rail cars to ensure all car sizes will fit.
In-Motion Scales
With an in-motion scale, the rail cars are coupled and move across the scale at approximately 5 mph. These in-motion scales have sophisticated controllers to capture the train’s exact speed, length, and weight while the cars are moving. In-motion scales help to eliminate the costs and hazards of uncoupling and positioning each car for weighing.
The Power Of PDXTM Technology
PDX™ has revolutionized vehicle scales, increasing protection and resistance. Vehicle scales with PDX™ are more reliable, efficient, and accurate.
The load cells use a predictive diagnostic “always on” technology to ensure your scale consistently operates at peak performance. PDX™ technology alerts you about scale performance issues including:
- Weighing errors
- Overloading
- Environmental conditions
- Network health
- Enclosure integrity
Say Goodbye to Junction Boxes
POWERCELL PDX™ load cells eliminate problematic junction boxes that can cause major issues with water, lightning, loose connections, debris, and other environmental-related problems. Instead, PDX™ load cells connect in a simple network. Electrical components are encased in a hermetically sealed load cell enclosure that protects critical parts from all environmental elements.
Built-In Lightning Protection
Worried about lightning strikes? PDX™ Technology eliminates the risk. With StrikeShield™, each load cell has built-in protection, which uses surge protectors and a single-point ground that prevents damage from lightning strikes. StrikeShield™ has been tested and certified by independent testing agencies to verify results.
